Under the Member Funding Assistance Program SHFS provides financial support for activities reflecting our mandate. As a registered charity SHFS is only able to give direct dollar grants to other registered charities. For SHFS members who are not registered charities, the assistance we can provide is to pay for or reimburse actual expenses related to the approved projects. The following is a summary of this program, but it must be remembered that in order to qualify, work on the project which is being considered must not yet have commenced. This program is intended to assist new initiatives that support SHFS's vision.
Eligibility
The Member Funding Assistance Program is available to any member of SHFS, be it Individual, Two Person or Association, that is in good standing (membership fees paid up to date) and has been a member of SHFS for at least two years.
Acceptable Projects
The Member Funding Assistance Program is intended to assist SHFS members in their pursuit of activities that relate to SHFS's mandate. In making their applications it is incumbent upon the applicant to indicate how their proposed project will meet this mandate. The following are examples of projects that SHFS may consider to support (this list is not intended to be all-inclusive but is intended to provide a general idea of the types of projects supported):
- original historical research - activities being researched should have occurred within the present day boundaries of Saskatchewan, although they may have occurred prior to the creation of these boundaries
- production of new community history books, excluding the updates of existing community history books, in other words SHFS will only support the production of a book if no other local history book exists for that community
- training costs associated with a course related to some aspect of gathering or preserving Saskatchewan's social history; examples could be attending a wheelwright's course, attending a series of classes on the art of creative non-fiction, attending a heritage management training seminar, etc.
- marking of a pre-settlement trail
- public presentation of a historical event
Grant Amounts
The maximum amount of any one grant is $2,000 per project. Projects need not necessarily be completed within one fiscal year, however multiple grants per individual project will not be approved.
Grant applications will be accepted throughout the year, however depending upon SHFS's previously awarded grants through the Member Funding Assistance Program within the particular fiscal year, approved granting amounts may be deferred until SHFS's following fiscal year. SHFS's fiscal year runs from May 1 to April 30.
As the name of this program implies, this is intended to be a funding assistance program. SHFS will only approve a grant up to 50% of the project's budgeted cost, the applicant is expected to self-finance or obtain from other sources the remainder of the funding.
Acknowledgment
Any printed or public presentation resulting from the project for which SHFS provided financial assistance must acknowledge that financial support was provided by the Saskatchewan History & Folklore Society, as well as Saskatchewan Lotteries.
Application Requirements
Each Member Funding Assistance Program application must include the following:
- applicant's name, address and telephone number
- amount of funding assistance being requested
- project description and how this proposed project meets SHFS's mandate to preserve, gather, and/or promote interest in the history or folklore of the area now known as Saskatchewan
