TOUR #1 - Saturday June 16 to Wednesday June 27, 2012

War of 1812

SHFS's first tour for the 2012 touring year will take us to the province of Ontario. 2012 is thte 200th Anniversary of the start of the War of 1812, which was fought between the United States and British Forces, aligned with First Nations peoples of the region. Had the result of this conflict been different, Saskatchewan would be a much different place than it presently is, as we would have become part of the United States.

For this tour we will be flying to Toronto (cost of flight is included in the listed Tour Cost) where our tour will start with a visit to Fort York National Historic Site, the birthplace of urban Toronto. Next we will travel south to the Niagara area visiting such 1812 sites as Fort George, Laura Secord's House and Brock's monument, besides the most commonly visited attraction, the Niagara Falls itself. While in the Niagara area we also may just happen to find ourselves visiting a winery or two.

After our time on the Niagara peninsula we will head along the northern shores of Lake Erie stopping at the Welland Canal to learn about its part in getting the Western grain crop to market. We will eventually find ourselves in Windsor, stopping at Fort Malden National Historic Park. Here we will also learn abou the role Fort Detroit played in the conflict, although on this tour we will not be crossing into the United States.

As we wend our way back to Toronto for our departure we will be stopping in such places as Petrolia, where the first North American oil well was brought into production, the Banting House National Historic Site in London celebrating the life of Dr. Frederick Banting, and the Doon Heritage Village located in Kitchener, a living heritage museum recreating life as it was in 1914.
